Capt. John is one of the few Door County native charter captains in the area. He started perch fishing with his dad, Ken and his brother, DJ at 3 years old. While growing up, he took the freedom of the bicycle to hit up public fishing spots all over Sturgeon Bay; chasing smallmouth bass, northern pike, trout, salmon and whatever bit. At 14 years old, Capt. John’s first job was as first mate for one of the most established and well known charters in Sturgeon Bay. At 16, he bought his first boat which took the lid off the restrictions of fishing from shore.
At 21, Capt. John acquired his Captain License. A harder to achieve 100 TON Master’s license with towing endorsement. At 23, Capt. John began working for the largest multi boat charter fishing operation in Door County. Spending 12 years as a hired boat operator, Capt. John continued to pursue and further his fishing career. He found the boat of his dreams, a 35’ Viking Sportfish, in Harrison Township, Michigan. After a 3 day trip, the Reel Impression made her home in Sturgeon Bay.
Reel Impression Sportfishing Charters is now an established charter fishing business located at Madelyn Marina on Sturgeon Bay’s east side. Capt. John takes special pride and honor in bringing families together aboard the Reel Impression to make a lifelong memory. With two youngsters of his own, Capt. John fully realizes the importance of creating a family or friendship bond outdoors. With 25 years experience, safety is his number one concern, followed by comfort and client involvement.
